BJE Committees 2009 - 2010

(Please note,  committees listed below are standing committees of the Board of Directors and membership in them requires appointment by the BJE president. The committees marked with an asterisk (*) are open to membership by parties with the appropriate interest and background.  Please contact BJE (323) 761-8605, for more information.)

Agency Financial Resource Development:  Develops and implements fundraising programs and coordinates all fundraising activities of BJE.

Agency Visibility:  Explores ways of promoting BJE’s visibility in the community as a unique leader in the provision of the Jewish educational activities which comprise its mission.

Allocations to Schools:  Works with staff to recommend the amounts of formula-based allocations, grants and special needs funds to be distributed to Jewish schools; periodically evaluates subvention policies and recommends changes as warranted.  
 
Audit:
Selects agency audit firm and meets with auditors to review annual financial audit.

Board Development Committee:  Plans activities and programs for the continuing education and involvement of Board members.

Board Nominations:  Annually appointed to perform those functions set forth in the Bylaws.

Educational Services:  Collaborates with staff to assess and meet needs for educational service delivery system to ensure alignment with agency goals and system-wide needs.  Includes subcommittees in specific areas as needed, including but not limited to, arts and culture, early childhood, religious school, day school, special education, and youth services.

Executive Personnel:  Engages the Executive Director, determines the terms of the engagement, and approves the contract entered into for the individual's services.  The Executive Director may consult with the committee as to any personnel matters on which he or she seeks the Committee's guidance.  All other personnel matters are to be dealt with by the Executive Director.  The committee consists of the President and such officers and past Presidents as the President may select.  The Committee will have, in addition to the President, six members, at least two of whom shall be past Presidents and, in order to act, the quorum requirement will be 5 members, including the President.

Futures:
Identifies and monitors developments and trends affecting Jewish education generally and, in Los Angeles, considers opportunities to develop strategic alliances with other organizations, and explores expanding BJE's funding and reach of its services through activities which generate additional revenues for BJE.  The chair of the Planning and Budget Committee or his/her designate shall be part of the Committee. 

Investment Committee:  Consistent with BJE investment policies, invests BJE resources to provide income in support of agency activities.

Marketing of Jewish Education Committee*:
  Develops and implements a variety of strategies for marketing participation in Jewish educational institutions and activities.

Organizational Support and Services*: Works to develop improved operational, governance and fiscal resources for the advancement of day school education. Includes Day School Fiscal Oversight subcommittee which reviews day school financial and governance procedures in conjunction with school accreditation cycle and as otherwise needed.

Personnel Practices:  Performs functions provided in Code of Personnel Practices (relating to K-12 education), including recommendations of salary scales, credential requirements, and arbitration of grievances.

Planning and Budget:  Reviews agency policies and programs, and recommends policy changes as needed.  Prepares and monitors agency budget.
  
School Services:
  Works with staff to assess and to meet needs for educational services; monitoring BJE educational service delivery system to ensure alignment with agency goals and system-wide needs. Includes sub-committees in specific areas, as needed (e.g., early childhood, special education, youth services).

School Standards, Affiliation and Accreditation:  Establishes policies and adopts rules and regulations governing eligibility for affiliation with and accreditation by BJE.  Monitors and assesses schools on a periodic basis.  Recommends BJE financial support of school accreditation projects, as appropriate.
