K-5 Reading Workshops with Erin Donelson

All training is at no cost.  Open to members of the BJE Consortium.

This workshop will support you in getting a Reading Workshop up and running at the start of the new school year. Because Reading Workshop is one part of a larger literacy curriculum, this will include an introduction to a Balanced Literacy approach of teaching reading. It will start with building theory and guiding principles behind this approach before moving into practical structures and strategies. These two days are designed to take you through a series of experiences and explorations to support building independent readers in your classroom.

You will also:

  • study routines, structures, and methods of a Reading Workshop
  • analyze student work/assessments to make teaching decisions
  • define other components of Balanced Literacy (Interactive Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Conferences, and Small Group Work) and study their connection to Reading Workshop
  • Consider the role of Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, and Word Study as a critical foundational piece of teaching young readers.
  • leave with a plan to launch the workshop at the start of next school year
