Day 1- Creating A Classroom Community to Maximize Student Learning



Participants will:

  • Take a deep dive into teacher language
  • Learn the characteristics of powerful teacher language. 
  • Understand the ways that teacher language shapes student learning.
  • Explore how teacher language is a key component in creating a warm, engaging classroom community
  • Explore the role that classroom rules play in creating a productive learning environment
  • Explore one way to co-create rules with students
  • Learn the characteristics of powerful classroom rules
  • Leave with a structure for creating and teaching rules during the first 6 weeks of school.
  • Morning Meeting as a powerful tool to create community

What is a Morning Meeting? Why take the time? What are the benefits? What is one possible structure?

 

Day 2- Classroom Organization That Promotes Student Learning and Independence



How teachers set up the classroom reflects:

  • What we believe about children and community
  • What we believe about how students learn
  • Fosters independence 

Ways that classroom organization builds students’ executive functioning skills

  • Participants will learn organizational strategies they can take back to their classrooms.
  • Participants will learn how to arrange their classrooms to promote student agency.
  • Using the environment as an additional teacher in the classroom
  • Role of anchor charts to capture/reinforce student learning
  • Tools in the environment to support student learning

Day 3 Student Engagement-Strategies to Engage Students From the First Day of School

  • What is student engagement?
  • What does it look like and sound like?
  • Exploration of strategies that get all students engaged
  • Turn and talk
  • Clock partners
  • Questioning techniques
  • Teacher language

Teachers will leave with strategies to use on the first day of school.
